Strength in numbers – Mother’s Day Classic

DSC 5009

Every May, Lifestyle Communities®’ homeowners, along with their friends and family, not only get into the pink of health, but also get into their pink bucket hats to take part in the Mother’s Day Classic Fun Run. And we’re so excited to put our breast foot forward once again this year.

Since the Classic began in 1998, it has raised nearly $40 million for breast cancer research by people of all ages in events all around Australia.

The first Classic registered over 3000 participants. Almost 25 years later, tens of thousands are walking and running towards a better understanding of ways to detect, treat and survive breast cancer.

The growing participation is proof of the strength in numbers, not only for fundraising goals but in the support and solidarity communities demonstrate for the 20,000 Australians who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

The Lifestyle Foundation is proud to be adding to that strength. In 2019, 551 Lifestylers across 13 communities raised $33,140 for breast cancer research – and were the largest group in that year’s event. Go big or go home we say!

Breast cancer survivor Sharon* was one of the marchers that year, walking the Tan in Melbourne with people from her Lifestyle community.

“Everybody helped. It was just fabulous,” says Sharon. “It makes you realise that you’re not the only person.”

Being surrounded by her community for the Classic was an uplifting and enlightening experience for Sharon. She realised that breast cancer didn’t only affect older women. The National Breast Cancer Foundation says that around 1000 young women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

“I’m trying to encourage my daughter to start having mammograms, because it can just hit anybody,” says Sharon.

Building on our incredible impact in 2019, Lifestylers from 16 communities came together to raise $60,653 in 2021.

This year, we’re gearing up for the biggest and breast Classic to date! We’re really looking forward to matching all fundraising efforts dollar for dollar once again, as we cross our fingers and shoelaces that we're able to gather the biggest team and raise the most money for the third year running. We’re determined to bring over 1000 Lifestylers to the 2022 Classic. If you believe in supporting all who have been touched by this insidious disease as much as we do, we’d love to see you there.

Sharon is ready for the challenge and is encouraging her family to lend their strength to hers.

“I’m determined that my husband is going to walk this year, and my daughter as well.”

Her family will be one of many marching in the Lifestyle team’s pink hats in the spirit of community – raising awareness, raising research funds, and in solidarity and support of survivors and those who have lost someone they love.
